General guidelines

  • We prioritise local artists based in Groningen.
  • Visiting performers from outside Groningen are welcome, but may perform a maximum of one slot per season to ensure space for local creatives.
  • We also prioritise voices that have been historically underrepresented in arts spaces, including women, LGBTQ+ people, people of colour, and disabled artists.
  • We are a community based event and to enhance this prioritise performers who have visited Pillow Society events before.
  • Show up early around 17:00 to get to know each other before the 18:00 community vegan dinner.
  • We close with an open mic, so there is always room to share live on the night if we can't give you the slot you had hoped for.

Guidelines for storytellers

  • Stories are capped at 10 minutes and should be told, not read from paper or screen.
  • For each event we strive for a balance between personal, historical, and fictional narratives, aiming for a minimum of one story that has been passed down for generations (folktale, myth, saga, wonder tale etc).
  • We also strive for a balance between professional storytellers and beginners, making sure everyone gets a chance.

Guidelines for musicians & poets

  • Musicians are invited to play two sets of 8-10 minutes (approx 2 songs); unplugged vibes are encouraged.
  • We love when musicians connect energetically to the stories and allow their music to move with theme, emotion, or timing.

Guidelines for poets

  • Poets/spoken word artists have a 5-minute slot.
  • Poems/spoken word pieces may be read from paper.
  • Reading from a phone feels disconnecting to the listeners, so we request if you want to read your piece to write it in a notebook and read from paper.
